Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar was born in 1891 to Ramji and Seetabai. His father was a social reformer who educated him at home along with his younger brother Lakshmi. On 14th December 1956, Dr B R Ambedkar died in Delhi at the age of eighty two. He became an economist, jurist, Buddhist scholar, philosopher, historian and politician who liberated the Indian society from inequalities based on caste. He is best known for writing India's constitution that enshrines equality before the law for every citizen of India irrespective of religion or region. He also led several movements against caste-based discrimination and helped establish philosophical schools of thought such as Buddhism based on equality and social justice. Dr Ambedkar started his formal education in 1896 at the age of seven when he entered the Gwalior secondary school. He passed his matriculation examination in 1900 and his BA examination in 1904. Between 1902 and 1905, Ambedkar attended the Elphinstone College in Mumbai, where he learnt economics and history, and attended lectures on Buddhist philosophy and sociology by Dharmanand Kosambi at Elphinstone College. He also studied at Government Law College, Bombay for a short time in 1906, but did not complete his LLB due to financial constraints. Instead, he took up various jobs such as schoolteacher to earn money. He later became a lawyer from the Bombay High Court in 1913. Dr Ambedkar was best known for his contribution to the struggle of untouchables, or Dalits, in India. He was born into the Mahar caste, who were regarded as untouchable at that time. After obtaining his law degree, Ambedkar participated in various social movements and also completed his thesis on "National Dividend" which was published by the Government of India in 1936. This book gave an account of India's economy and how it could be improved to benefit all Indians rather than only the rich minority. It also pushed for greater agricultural productivity, better education facilities and employment opportunities for poorer Indians. In 1930, Ambedkar along with some friends founded the Independent Labour Party (ILP), a third party which opposed the Indian National Congress and the British Raj. He was elected as the President of the Dalit Sah MAhagrata Sabha, a political organization for Dalits. He actively participated in Andhra Pradesh's political movement and was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1952 with support from voters of his community. Later during his life, Ambedkar joined various organizations such as Republican Party (India), Communist Party of India and Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) during his lifetime. Dr Ambedkar was awarded the Bharat Ratna award in 1990. He is considered as 'Father of the Nation' for his social contribution to the Indian society.
